Drew Herring takes rookie of the year
While most rookies would have been doing burnouts along the frontstretch after clinching the Miller Lite Rookie of the Year title, a sullen Drew Herring slipped from his machine following the Black’s Tire American 200 at Rockingham Speedway and simply leaned up against the pit wall. Despite winning top rookie honors and a $20,000 bonus, Herring was in no mood to celebrate. And his dejection was understandable.
With 10 laps remaining in the race, Herring was pulling away from Clay Rogers, inching ever closer to his first Hooters Pro Cup win. His faithful followers were on their feet with anticipation, and Herring was up on the wheel. Eight laps around Rockingham Speedway was all he needed for a breakout win.
“I was on cruise control,” said Herring. “I knew we had it.”
Then, the unthinkable happened.
Herring was picked by a lapped car and Clay Rogers pounced, slipping to the high side as Herring jammed the brakes and made contact with the lapped m ...[more]

Rookie Herring Leads Final Practice
Drew Herring paced the final practice session for Saturday’s running of the Sears Auto Center 150 at The Milwaukee Mile. The rookie, driving the No. 22s Black’s Tire & Auto Service Ford, toured the flat, mile-long track in 30.280 seconds at 118.890 mph to pace the 48 drivers that took times.
Herring, driver of the No. 22s Black’s Tire & Auto Service Ford, came up 1.12 seconds short of his first Hooters Pro Cup win, but second place was still his best finish in his first four starts.
“This is the run we needed,” said Herring, who pocketed an extra $1,000 for being the Miller Lite Rookie of the Race. “We definitely would have liked one more position, but we needed a nice solid finish today, and we got that. This is a great confidence builder, and hopefully we can carry this into the next few races.”
Drew Herring is currently 11th in the 2008 Southern Division ...[more]
The Drew Crew
By Paul Warner
Drew Herring, driver of the No. 22s Black’s Tire&Auto Service Ford, always had fans at South Boston (Va.) Speedway and Southern National (N.C.) Raceway Park during his racing career. But, evidently, Herring’s fans are willing to venture far outside of Benson, N.C., to follow their favorite.
When the first practice rolled off at 10:30 a.m., they were already in their seats, cheering wildly when Herring made his first laps.
“That was crazy,” said a grateful Herring. “I’m in Florida, eight hours away from home, and I got just as many fans as anyone here. When you hear that many people cheer for you it gets you pumped up.”
Herring was a little too pumped up in qualifying, but he rallied from starting 21st-and a mid-race spin-to finish 10th in his first Pro Cup start.
“I thought were we at least going to be in the top 10 in qualifying, but the driver got a little overzealous. I guess I thought I was in ...[more]

Southern National Champ gunning for rookie title with Ricky Benton Racing
Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Drew Herring knows how to win, and so does Ricky Benton Racing. Now, in 2008, the duo will combine their winning ways in hopes of grabbing the coveted Miller Lite Rookie of the Year title-and more-in the Hooters Pro Cup Series.
“It’s always exciting when you get to move up in racing,” said Herring, who won the Late Model title at South Boston in 2006 and the Southern National title in 2007. “But it’s really good to move up with a good team.”
And RBR is just that.
In 2002, RBR and driver Jason Sarvis won the overall Hooters Pro Cup Series title. In 2004, RBR and Matt Carter won the overall Miller Lite Rookie of the Year title together.
“I’d love to win the Rookie of the Year and the overall title,” said Herring, who will pilot the No. 22s BTS Tire&Wheel Distributor Chevrolet. “Mike Hester’s a great crew chief and been around a long time. Once we get our communication down, we’ll be goo ...[more]
