Know When You Need New Tires

March 3rd, 2009

There are two popular ways to check for signs of tire tread wear. One easy way is the penny test. Simply insert a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace your tires.

Another way is to look at the tread wear indicator bar that’s molded into your tires. The bars are located at the bottoms of the tread grooves in several locations around the tire. When a tire is so worn that these bars become visibly flush with the adjacent tread ribs, it’s time to replace the tire.

Goodyear suggests you check your tire tread using either method every 3,000 miles.

New Eagle GT leads the way in recent media coverage

The new Eagle GT is already garnering attention from various outlets, which have been writing about the high performance tire’s eye-catching tread and sidewall design.

Especially targeted at the “tuner” segment – those who consider their car a form of self-expression and pride – the Eagle GT was described by Performance Auto & Sound magazine as “an ultra-high performance tire, with an aggressive tread and clean sidewalls.”

Mike Maez, of Modified magazine wrote, “While many enthusiasts in our particular market segment (tuner cars, sport compacts) consider the inevitable decision of which tire manufacturer to spend their hard-earned dollars, rarely do they consider Goodyear. With the new Eagle GT, however, Goodyear is aiming to change all of that.”

Additional coverage is expected in several other auto enthusiast magazines, along with key enthusiast websites. ...[more]

Briggs & Sons Tire Rolls On as Black’s Tire & Auto Service

May 26th, 2007

WHITEVILLE, NC – The similarities are uncanny. Two family businesses. Two stories that began with a small gas station and a big commitment to exceptional service that led to remarkable success. Today, these two family businesses are one. Black’s Tire & Auto Service has acquired Briggs & Sons Tire.  And with this acquisition, Black’s now operates 31 locations throughout the eastern Carolinas, including tire and service centers, as well as retread plants and wholesale and warehouse facilities.

Ricky Benton began his business in 1975, when he leased a service station in Cerro Gordo from Crowell Black (owner of Black’s Tire Service) and operated the business with his wife, Dianne.  In 1981, Black recognized Benton’s potential and asked him to manage the Black’s Tire store in Whiteville.  In the decades that followed, under Ricky Benton’s management, Black’s Tire grew from a single store to include 18 locations throughout the eastern Car ...[more]
